Y Goeden Erasmus

On Wednesday 14^th July, Dr Hywel Ceri Jones unveiled a sculpture titled ‘Y Goeden Erasmus’ by Mr David Peterson at Dyffryn Taf School. Mr Petersen is a renowned local Welsh sculptor and artist and Dr Jones played the leading role in the design, negotiation and management of several EU flagship programmes, notably Erasmus (EU youth exchange programme).

Ysgol Dyffryn Taf has been linked to schools in Finland, Portugal, Melilla and La Reunion since 2016 via the Erasmus+ programme. For their current project the Erasmus students at Dyffryn Taf sought to work with Mr Petersen to create a focal point for the school grounds. One that would stimulate thought, whilst tying in with the principles of their current project ‘Towards the Sustainable Development Goals’.

The sculpture aims to focus on all the positive and negative aspects of society. It aims to show students that, by sharing core values and working together as one, they are able to achieve the greatest outcome. This embodies the philosophy of the Erasmus+ programme. Using words in both English and Welsh and by incorporating symbols that indicate good (in the branches and leaves) and bad (in the roots and trunk) the sculpture reflects the students’ ideas. The design also uses recycled scrap in line with the principles of SDG12 Responsible Consumption and Production. The leaves have been painted green on one side to symbolise Spring and the restart of the seasons and bronze on the other side for the Autumn and the end of the Erasmus+ scheme. But with the Welsh Assembly’s pledge to fund future exchanges over the next few years the Autumn now gives way for future Springs.

The sculpture area had been a little under-used over the years so students in Year 12 have been busy transforming the area to ensure ‘Yr Ardd’ is now a beautiful space that is worthy of hosting the sculpture. The space will now be used as a working garden, outdoor teaching space and reflection area for students during break and lunch times.

Ar Ddydd Mercher Gorffennaf 14^eg, dadorchuddiodd Dr Hywel Ceri Jones gerflun o’r enw ‘Y Goeden Erasmus’ gan Mr David Peterson yn Ysgol Dyffryn Taf. Mae Mr Petersen yn gerflunydd ac artist lleol o Gymru a chwaraeodd Dr Jones y brif ran wrth ddylunio, negodi a rheoli sawl rhaglen flaenllaw yn yr UE, yn benodol Erasmus (rhaglen cyfnewid ieuenctid yr UE).

Mae Ysgol Dyffryn Taf wedi ei chysylltu ag ysgolion yn y Ffindir, Portiwgal, Melilla a La Reunion ers 2016 trwy'r rhaglen Erasmus+. Roedd myfyrwyr Erasmus yn Nyffryn Taf am weithio gyda Mr Petersen i greu canolbwynt ar gyfer tir yr ysgol ar gyfer eu prosiect presennol. Un a fyddai’n ysgogi meddwl, wrth glymu i mewn ag egwyddorion eu prosiect ‘Tuag at y Nodau Datblygu Cynaliadwy’.

Nod y cerflun hwn yw canolbwyntio ar holl agweddau cadarnhaol a negyddol cymdeithas. Ei nod yw dangos i fyfyrwyr eu bod, trwy rannu gwerthoedd craidd a chydweithio, yn gallu llwyddo. Mae hyn yn ymgorffori athroniaeth rhaglen Erasmus +. Gan ddefnyddio geiriau yn Saesneg a Chymraeg a thrwy ymgorffori symbolau sy'n dynodi da (yn y canghennau a'r dail) a drwg (yn y gwreiddiau a'r boncyff) mae'r cerflun yn adlewyrchu syniadau'r myfyrwyr. Mae'r dyluniad hefyd yn ailgylchu metel sgrap yn unol ag egwyddorion SDG12 Defnydd a Chynhyrchu Cyfrifol. Mae'r dail wedi'u paentio'n wyrdd ar un ochr i symboleiddio'r Gwanwyn ac ailgychwyn y tymhorau ac efydd yr ochr arall ar gyfer yr Hydref a diwedd y rhaglen Erasmus+. Ond gydag addewid Cynulliad Cymru i ariannu cyfnewidiadau yn y dyfodol dros y blynyddoedd nesaf mae’r Hydref bellach yn ildio ar gyfer Gwanwynoedd newydd yn y dyfodol.

Roedd ardal y cerflun wedi cael ei thanddefnyddio ychydig dros y blynyddoedd felly mae myfyrwyr ym Mlwyddyn 12 wedi bod yn brysur yn trawsnewid yr ardal i sicrhau bod ‘Yr Ardd’ bellach yn ofod hardd sy’n deilwng o gynnal y cerflun. Bydd y gofod nawr yn cael ei ddefnyddio fel gardd weithiol, man addysgu awyr agored a man myfyrio i fyfyrwyr yn ystod amser egwyl a chinio.
